The year in review: Mobile marketing in 2012 and beyond
No doubt about it – 2012 was a huge year for mobile. Mobile usage has skyrocketed over the past few years thanks to advances in technology and widespread consumer adoption, and there’s no sign of it slowing.
According to a 2012 infographic by digitalbuzzblog.com:
There are currently 6 billion mobile subscribers worldwide, which equals over 87 per cent of the world’s population. Over 1 billion of these are smartphone subscribers.
China and India lead the way in mobile usage, accounting for 30 per cent of this growth.
There are over 1.2 billion people accessing the web from their mobile devices.
Mobile searches have quadrupled over the past year, and for many items, one in seven searches are now mobile.
Mobile devices account for 8.49 per cent of global website hits.
35 per cent of smartphone users have made a purchase with their device, and this number is expected to increase to 39 per cent in 2013 and to 43 per cent by 2015.1
Mobile commerce reached $10 billion in 2012 and is expected to grow to $14 billion in 2013 and $25 billion by 2015.
Mobile ad spending is predicted to hit $6.4 billion in 2012, growing to $20.6 billion by 2015.
2012: Year of Android and the app
In terms of smartphone popularity, Android leads the way. It runs on half of all smartphones shipped, and its user base increases by a massive 700,000 users a day.
2012 was also the year of the app, driven mostly by the rise of Android and iOS users who have more than doubled in the past year, accounting for 88 per cent of those who have downloaded an app in the past 30 days.2
App downloads are set to explode in the coming years, with ABI research predicting that annual Android app downloads worldwide will increase to 58 billion by 2016, along with 27 billion downloads for Apple’s iPhone.
The number of paid app downloads are expected to see huge growth as well, from 5.02 billion in 2012 to an estimated 8.14 billion in 2013 and 21.67 billion by 2016.3
Mobile trends for 2013 and beyond
IDC says that IT spending in 2013 will exceed $2.1 trillion worldwide, up 5.7 per cent from 2012, and “the biggest driver of that growth will be mobility”. They predict that sales of smart mobile devices will grow by 20 per cent and drive 57 per cent of all IT market growth.4
